On Thursday, Jan. 3rd, the girls’ basketball team defeated the Creston Panthers 59-37. The Cardinals improved their record to 9-0 with strong performances from seniors Konnor Sudmann, Kayla Chapman, and Sydni Huisman.

Sudmann led all scorers with 21 points.  “We played defense really well as a team,” said Sudmann.  She said the team implemented some new offense over Christmas break, and it was a little sloppy in the team’s first game back.

Chapman and Huisman followed with 12 and 10 points each.  The team got off to a slow offensive start, trailing at the end of the first quarter by one point.  The Cardinals then gained the lead in the second and made quick work of their opponent from that point on.

“Our team played really good defense, and we successfully stopped their bigs and kept them in foul trouble,” said Chapman.  Chapman said it was a fun game to play in because Creston was a good team, and the team was happy with the outcome.

The offense heated up in the third quarter with Sudmann scoring nine of her 21 points in that quarter alone.  The Cardinals expanded their lead to 42-25, and they added the final 17 in the 4th quarter.

Sudman also committed to play basketball at the next level earlier in the day.  She will be attending Briar Cliff University next year where she will join former teammate Madelyn Deitchler and the Chargers.

The Cardinals’ next opponent is the Riverside Bulldogs who they will face on Friday, Jan. 4th.  It is the final team of the first rotation of conference play before they start the cycle over. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
