On Saturday, Dec. 8th, the boys’ basketball team defeated the Bishop Heelan Crusaders 50-30.  The Cardinals improved their record to 4-0 in a dominant performance led by a trio of double-digit scorers.  Senior Jerry Jorgensen led the team with 15 points, and juniors Jack Tiarks and Jon Schwarte followed with 11 and 10.

The Cardinals started the game with a commanding lead that held Bishop Heelan scoreless until the closing seconds of the first quarter when the Crusaders hit a pair of three pointers that ended the first with a score of 15-6.

All 15 of Jorgensen’s points came from beyond the three-point line.  “I felt we played our best defensive game of the season,” said Jorgenson, “Through our first two games we weren’t shooting well from the three-point and free-throw line, but as a team, we’re all putting the ball through the net and that is all due to how much time we’re spending in the gym after practice.”

The team also had a dominating effort on the boards bringing in 45 rebounds in total.  A highlight of the game was a thunderous, second quarter dunk by Tiarks.

“We play defense really well as a team,” said Tiarks, “Heelan was a very good team, and the fact that we held them to 30 points was really good for us.”

A strong defensive performance was led by Schwarte who had six blocks.  The Cardinals ran a 2-3 zone that allowed the 6-foot-10 junior to control the paint throughout the game.

The boys’ team will travel to Audubon next on Tuesday, Dec. 11th.  They will face the Wheelers who come into the game with an overall record of four wins and one loss with an undefeated conference record.
