Wrestlers Prepare for the Takedown This Season

By Katie Houser

The 2018- 2019 wrestling season began officially on the Nov. 12. They had pre-season practices before this. The new coach of the wrestling season is coach Phil Kennedy.

The Treynor Cardinal Wrestling team’s previous season consisted of Brennon Mauer and Ian Dinsmore going to districts and both Mauer and Dinsmore taking third at districts. The team also made it to regional duels.  This year, the team has even bigger goals.

“I would like to improve from last year by making it to districts or state personally, and as a team I want to make it to the next round of regional duals,” said senior Harley Carberry.

Junior Chase Reber shares some of Carberry’s goals.

“As an individual, make it past sectionals and as a team, make it to regional duels for the third year in a row,” said Reber.

This passion of making it to the regional finals and then moving on to state is a goal for many of these returning wrestlers. Reber said making it to the regional finals is a three-year tradition and many of the wrestlers are ready for this upcoming season.

“I am most excited about this season because being a senior gives me the opportunity to lead the team and support younger teammates,” said Carberry.

With three seniors on the team this year including Max Schweer, the underclassmen have some teammates to look up to and help them improve on their techniques.

“I’m most excited about getting to bond as a team and get some team wins as well as individual,” said Mauer.

Mauer and Carberry are both very supporting of their teammates. They are ready to work hard to make it to state this season both as a team and individually.

The first meet is the Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. at Woodbine High School against Woodbine and SWI Community.
