By Drew Petersen

Derrick is part of the Class of 2020. He participates in Cross Country, Swimming, Track and Field, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Concert Band, and Junior Optimist Club.

In cross country, Derrick loves being able to push himself and see that his times do down. His favorite part about band is being able to play good music with the other band members. While in the Junior Optimist Club, Derrick loves to be able to give back to his community. He thinks that the community has done a lot for him, so he is glad to have the chance to give back.

Cross Country is currently underway, and Derrick feels the best he could as of now. “ I definitely attribute this to training over the summer and working harder in practice.  I hope to continue my improvement throughout the season and I foresee this being my best season yet.” Derrick’s best time of the season is a 17 minute 11 second 5k(3.1 mile) race at MVAOCOU. Thompson placed third overall that race.

During the offseason in between Cross Country, Derrick participates in Swimming. He says that swimming is one of the hardest things he has done. “I did not expect to be as difficult as running and was completely caught off guard by the amount of swimming that I had to do.  I don’t think I have ever been so sore in my life. I’m very glad I continued, however, because it helped me stay in shape over the winter and helped me prepare for track season.”
