The Treynor boys’ soccer team played host in a four-team tournament on Saturday, April 27.

Outside of the Cardinals, the tournament teams included East Sac County, Missouri Valley, and AHSTW.

Treynor faced conference foe Missouri Valley in the first game and dominated the Big Reds 10-0 for their second consecutive ten-goal margin of victory. Junior Luke Mieska continued his dominance around the goal as he led the Cardinals with 4 goals, while senior Brett Phelps added a hat trick of his own in the victory.

The Cardinals carried their winning ways into the second game, defeating East Sac County 5-2. Leading Treynor once again, Luke Mieska added another hat trick while junior Quinn Navara added the team’s other 2 goals.

In the third and final game, the Cardinals took on the Vikings of AHSTW in a big conference game. Despite the 2-1 loss, the boys took some positives away from just their second loss of the season.

“In our loss to Avoca, everyone played really hard,” Mieska said, “It was a great game and we didn’t lose due to our effort.”

Mieska, the state’s leading goal scorer in all classes with 25, credits his success to his teammates.

“Lately it’s all been working for me, and I have my team to thank for that,” Mieska said, “Without great through balls from guys like Keaton, Quinn, Jake, and more, I wouldn’t even be near the top of the scorers in the state, but it’s kind of cool to know that I’m at the top right now.”

Quinn Navara, who is typically one of the team’s starting forwards, started the first game much different than usual as he and junior Nate McCombs traded positions. In a dominant double-digit win against the Big Reds of Missouri Valley, the strategy seemed to work.

With an 8-2 overall record on the season, Navara knows there are different aspects of the game that the Cardinals can improve on.

“We need to improve on possessing the ball and not having many defensive breakdowns,” Navara said.

Treynor will be back in action on Tuesday, April 30 against Abraham-Lincoln at the Gale Wickersham Athletic Complex.
